Artist's Archives: Quick trip down memory lane
David C. Jackson has been an active artist for the majority of his life. Born and raised in Springfield, MA, the young artist has cultivated and refined his talent over the years to find his purpose and reason for displaying his work. His parents had always exposed him to various aspects of all cultures and encouraged him to cherish his talents. Different forms of art ran through the Jackson household from music and martial arts to plays and paintings. βHe never drew stick figures,β his mother proclaims. βEven when he was five, David drew what he saw and made his own interpretation.β Comics, childrenβs books, and artists such as Norman Rockwell, Georgia OβKeefe, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali played vital roles in Jacksonβs upbringing. These vast influences explain the complexity of his portfolio and disparities between subject matters.
At the age of nine his parents introduced him to artist Donald Blanton who took him under his wing giving the young student confidence and skills that groomed his gift. Working with Mr. Blanton gave him insight to creating art shows where Jackson has been featured in exhibits since elementary school. These venues include the University of Connecticut, Western New England College, the University of Massachusetts, American International College, and the Mass Mutual Insurance Art Show to name a few. Along his journey he has been incorporating many different techniques to form his own eclectic style to appeal to the masses. Recognizing beauty in all aspects of life is Jacksonβs drive. His passion and love for art is reflected by the lifestyle and different environments around the world. In order for those who have different perspectives to gain appreciation for each other, he has composed pieces that involve the ever-growing, powerful, culture of hip hop as a central base for his mission. His deep understanding of his generationβs achievements and struggles inspire him to concentrate on the positive attributes in which we can help provide a better place for future childrenβs creativity.
As a graduate from the University of Connecticut, Jacksonβs concentration was not fine art, but liberal arts. His interest in the human mind and the way groups of people perceive the world has led him to major in psychology and minor in sociology. He understands that being an artist is a way of life and expression. Studying different avenues of life has only strengthened his art work. Realizing that we can never stop learning, he strives to discover something new each day which he can bring to life.
Jacksonβs dream and lifetime goals are reflected in his work. Pushing aesthetics as far as they may go leaves the artistβs creations unlimited. They are filled with social consciousness, charisma, and an unprecedented approach ranging from power to sympathy for the subjects he chooses. In order to broaden hopeβs spectrum, there must be a comprehension for compassion and unity which Jackson aspires his work will shed light to.
Just like life, art is a journey about perspective.
